Lea Valley Academy

Part of the

LVA Maths Success!

The United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a charity founded in 1996 to help with the education of children in mathematics within the UK.  This November Lea Valley Academy entered 9 students for the Senior UKMT Challenge, which is geared toward A Level students.

We were thrilled that 5 students won silver and bronze certificates, including 3 year 11 students. Make no mistake, this was a very tough competition and none of these students had ever undertaken a UKMT challenge of this level of difficulty. The winning students are:

Year 11 Success again

Arnesa, Rhema and Darwin worked well with staff and students at the prestigious King’s Maths School in July. They were then successful to get a placement at GlaxoSmithKline plc, a British pharmaceutical company in October where they benefited from overviews on how drugs get to market and interview practice. They found it challenging to work with private school students, but graduated with the Silver Cadets accreditation and a greater sense of belief. They were reluctant to undertake the Senior UKMT challenge in November, but with some encouragement and plenty of practice, they were able to conquer their fears and emerge victorious. It is wonderful to witness the increased confidence and independence of these model year 11s.

ProDirect undertaking an academic challenge

3 of our ProDirect students enthusiastically undertook the Senior UKMT, although they did not win a medal place, it is important for them to acknowledge life beyond the football pitch and recognise academic qualifications will give you choices in life.

The Intermediate UKMT competition will be held on Thursday 7th February 2019 and it will interesting to see if the year 11s can surpass their achievements at the Senior Level. We are also looking for a team of year 8s and 9s to compete against other schools within the UKMT team challenge category.

Well done Lea Valley!
