The Mayor’s Awards for Writing

Now in its ninth year, the Mayor’s Awards for Writing continues to go from strength to strength. The competition is open to local young authors and this year, they have been invited to address the theme of “CONNECTIONS” in their short stories for year 5-8.

River R. Yr8 is the talented Lea Valley Academy winner and our finalist. His short story titled ‘Links’ about a young boy who by meeting a homeless person, realises that everything is connected and has consequence. It will be entered into the borough wide competition. River has been inspired by writing his story to expand on his reading to give him more ideas.

If shortlisted, River will be invited to an evening prize-giving event to be held on Thursday, 25 April 2019 at The Latymer School, Edmonton.
Barnet and Southgate Principal David Byrne said: “The Writing Awards continue to go from strength to strength. It highlights the breadth of talent in creative writing across a number of primary and secondary schools in the borough”.
Thanks to Mr Phillips, Teacher of English for organising the Lea Valley competition and well done River for your creative accomplishment and being selected to represent Lea Valley Academy, and best of luck with your continued success in the competition!
