World Book Day

The reason we celebrate World Book Day at Lea Valley Academy is to encourage students to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to own their own book using the vouchers that are available.

As a school we have embraced the power of Reading for Pleasure . . . it has a significant effect on achievement, books are of huge importance to young people’s development. The effect on student’s social and academic progress, by regularly reading books at 16, has been found to be four times greater than the advantage children gain from parental influence or social background. Every Yr7-10 student enjoys Tutor Reading Time when they are read to from a carefully selected range of exciting and diverse novels; to develop literacy, encourage the love of reading, understanding of new vocabulary and situations and is a calm start to their day! Our Library is open to students to study, do homework and select from over 3000 fiction and non-fiction books with a Librarian on hand to guide and encourage.

This year staff have been putting up “My favourite book is . . . “ posters around the school, there are celebratory bookmarks to be picked up and a Book Day Bingo quiz to be enjoyed.
